Whistleblower Reports of Lax Cybersecurity Expected to Rise - The Wall Street Journal

Companies should do a better job of handling internal cybersecurity complaints before they escalate to whistleblowing, which is becoming more common in the cyber field, lawyers and industry veterans said.

Security chiefs are now more aware of the personal risks they face over cybersecurity deficiencies after high-profile allegations of weak cybersecurity at companies including Twitter Inc. and Uber Technologies Inc. Moreover, regulators are considering new rules on minimum cyber safeguards that could place a greater compliance burden on individuals, another factor that could lead to more cyber whistleblowing, participants said at the WSJ Pro Cybersecurity Forum held virtually on Wednesday.

While businesses have whistleblowing procedures for illegal activities such as sexual harassment and discrimination, cybersecurity issues aren’t always given the same attention, said Avi Gesser, co-chairman of the data strategy and privacy group at law firm Debevoise & Plimpton LLP.

“A lot of companies don’t necessarily think of those as being potential whistleblower risks and therefore, they don’t get escalated, and they don’t get investigated properly as whistleblower complaints,” Mr. Gesser said.
