Whistleblower: Vendor improperly handled COVID-19 vaccines given at Maryland vaccine sites - WBAL TV Baltimore

BALTIMORE —

A whistleblower who spoke Monday with the 11 News I-Team claimed some of Maryland's COVID-19 vaccine clinics operated outside of the Centers Disease Control and Prevention's recommended policies and created a public health risk.

Mobile COVID-19 vaccine clinics are set up around Maryland to get the vaccines into underserved communities.

Clinician Jessica Ray, who used to oversee some of the mobile vaccination site operations for the Maryland Department of Health, said she discovered systemic safety problems with how vendors handled vaccines at mobile vaccination sites and was met with resistance when she tried to bring it to her supervisor's attention. Her complaint focuses on one company in particular, TrueCare24.

"People may have received vaccines that are ineffective and were unaware, and when that happens, people may be acting out as if they are covered and exposing themselves to higher risk than they would otherwise," Ray said. "There were some cultural challenges in the program where there is so much drive to push out the numbers and make sure we go to certain points in time."

Ray said she filed a complaint with federal and state officials in which she singled out TrueCare24, which is one of the companies hired by the state to run mobile vaccination sites. Ray said she quickly noticed a number of red flags. She accuses TrueCare24 of storing vaccines in medical refrigerators in hotels and cars.
