Whistleblowing in the new world of work - The Manila Times

YOU may have noticed the return of a familiar name in the news, more than a decade after he first hit the headlines because of a controversial government deal. Jun Lozada, the whistleblower who came forward with bribery allegations against high-ranking government officials in relation to a national broadband deal that the government was supposed to sign with a Chinese telecom company in 2007, is back in the spotlight. This time, however, he is the one facing prison time for a graft case.

Like many whistleblowers, Lozada's story reveals the risk individuals take when they choose to speak up against fraud, misconduct, harassment or any other kind of unethical behavior. There is no shortage of stories of whistleblowers who have been threatened or whose lives have been turned upside down as a result of pushing back against the wrongdoing of people more powerful than them. This only serves to highlight the importance of establishing secure and confidential reporting channels, especially within large organizations.

The coronavirus pandemic changed the whistleblowing environment in that there has been a significant increase in fraud and with that a spike in whistleblower activity. According to a 2020 survey by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, 79 percent of its member companies reported an increase in fraud and 90 percent expected a further increase in the next 12 months.
