Why Ohio issued warnings on medical spas over false claims on 'weight loss drugs' - WKRC

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has issued stern warnings to 14 medical spas, including two locally, urging them to cease making false claims about their versions of popular weight loss drugs.

Yost highlighted that the primary concern is the spas' assertions that their custom-made variations of Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro are FDA-approved. These are referred to as compounded drugs, which, while containing some of the same ingredients, are not identical to the original medications.

Two of the warned spas, Glow in Loveland and Limelight Laser and Medical Spa in Cincinnati, are located in the local area. Previously, it was permissible under law for med spas to use compounded drugs due to a shortage, allowing compounding pharmacies to produce and sell them. However, the FDA has since stated there is no longer a shortage, and such practices should not continue.

"The letters just went out, so you should follow up with me in a couple of weeks," said Yost. "These boutiques advertise themselves, and it’s not just really word of mouth; they have websites and make claims."

Consumers are advised to be aware that compounded drugs have not been tested for safety or effectiveness by the FDA and are not equivalent to Ozempic, Wegovy, or other similar drugs. Unlike generic drugs, which are FDA-approved and meet the same standards as brand names, compounded drugs made by pharmacies for individual patients lack the same oversight.
