The Wilmington City Council on Thursday canceled planned meetings that would have allowed lawmakers to vote on whether to maintain a five-year residency requirement for new city employees.

A special meeting scheduled for Friday afternoon along with meetings set for Monday evening were canceled because not enough council members would be present at the meetings, again placing the city’s residency requirement in limbo since action on the law was tabled during a City Council meeting Oct. 19.

Council President Ernest "Trippi" Congo said that in order for the legislative body to meet, they must have at least seven council members present.

The ordinance, introduced by Councilperson Shane Darby, would have given new city employees a year to move into Wilmington’s boundaries and establish a five-year maximum residency requirement for employees.
