A 15-year veteran broker in New York who switched from Merrill Lynch to Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management in May 2022 has filed a $7 million defamation lawsuit against his estranged wife based on allegations that she conveyed false “embarrassing” information about him to his employers and clients.
Jean-Charles Beriau alleged that his wife disclosed to both Merrill and Morgan Stanley false information implying that he was “addicted to drugs, had problems with the law, and was not fit for his current employment,” according to his complaint filed in a New York state court on January 18. The allegations come amid a pending divorce.
Beriau, 47, filed as exhibits to his lawsuit copies of multiple emails that the wife sent to his compliance-monitored Merrill address. The subject line in one sent on January 21, 2022 makes specific reference to STD testing bills, and her message also raises false claims about his suffering from bipolar disorder and recommends he find “a cleaner hooker,” according to his complaint.
In August 2022, the wife, Thea Shive, sent a letter to “his new place of employment,” his complaint alleges. It informed Morgan Stanley falsely that he had “committed acts of fraud, purchased hookers, uses drugs, and has engaged in other illegal conduct,” the complaint states.
Beriau was required to meet with the human resources department as a result and was investigated, according to his complaint.
