CHESHIRE Police says that it has arrested a Warrington woman on suspicion of wasting police time after resources from two police forces were diverted to ‘false kidnap claims’.
In the early hours of this morning, Monday, officers in Warrington responded to reports of an incident in which a caller claimed that their partner had been kidnapped by an unknown group of people.
A large-scale police operation was launched at 12.47am, and the partner reported to have been kidnapped was located.
The force says that it was ‘subsequently established that the claim of a kidnapping was false, and that the call was a hoax’.
In addition to the hoax call, the caller – a 22-year-old woman from Warrington – had also reportedly contacted a relative in the Bury area.
It is said that they claimed that they too were under threat of being kidnapped, which prompted the relative to contact Greater Manchester Police.
As a result, GMP resources were diverted to safeguard the individual, and this claim was also later proven to be false.
The 22-year-old woman was subsequently arrested on Museum Street in Warrington town centre at around 2.50am on suspicion of wasting police time and engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour.
A Cheshire Police spokesman said that the woman remains in police custody at this time and is assisting officers with their enquiries.
