LANSING, MI — Increasing transparency surrounding legislation and tackling “zombie laws,” such as those pertaining to abortion, will be top of mind for Democrats as they take the legislative lead next month according to outgoing House Minority Leader Donna Lasinski.
Lasinski, D-Scio Township, spoke with reporters Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the state capitol for a year end roundtable. She spoke at length of what to expect in a new Democratic majority, as well as her belief that the House not opening an ethics investigation into former House Speaker Lee Chatfield, R-Levering, was a misstep on behalf of the legislature.
In turning to the future, Lasinski said she didn’t anticipate Democrats’ leadership styles to change much from where they currently sat when it came to things like appropriations or negotiating the budget.
In those hearings, Democrats have traditionally brought forward changes and explained them before the panel before – typically – being voted down by a Republican majority on the committee; Republicans, oppositely, have traditionally introduced and passed through budgetary amendments publicly without much fanfare. Negotiations on the contents of an amendment have usually happened behind closed doors and are later made available to reporters.
