GREENSBORO, N.C. — The budget deficit for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools is impacting hundreds of staff, from lay-offs to re-assignments and furloughs.
2 Wants To Know: Are laid-off or furloughed school staff eligible for unemployment benefits? For those laid off, NC Commerce Department leaders say, don't wait to file for benefits. But if you're furloughed, it really depends on how long your furlough is for.
"So, when it comes to unemployment benefits, the rules changed back in 2013. So, when you file for unemployment, the first week of eligibility is a waiting period week, which is not compensatory. 3:35 So if you're only out that one week, then it's just gonna apply as your waiting period week. Uh, so you won't get a check if you're only out of work for one week," said Assistant Secretary M. Antwon Keith, NC Department of Commerce.
Keith said often times people believe unemployment is guaranteed, but unemployment benefits are not taken out of your paycheck; that money is actually paid by the employer.
Whether you're furloughed or laid off, an employment lawyer we talked with said, don't assume your personnel file with the school system is up to date.
"I would tell them to review your personnel files if you are at a place where you've been furloughed and let go, make sure that your file looks clean, so that way if you want to go to another school district...
