A former xAI engineer has filed a lawsuit claiming he was fired after warning company leaders about safety risks tied to Grok, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot. The case lands at an unusually sensitive moment: just as SpaceX prepares for what could become the largest IPO in history.

Devin Kim, who now heads the Center for AI Safety, alleges that xAI retaliated against him for raising concerns that Grok could enable discrimination, weapons-related risks and other harmful outcomes. The lawsuit was filed in California state court and names both xAI and SpaceX as defendants, according to Reuters.

The timing makes the case bigger than a single employment dispute. SpaceX is expected to price its IPO on June 11, 2026, with trading set to begin on Nasdaq on June 12. Reuters reported that the company is targeting a $75 billion raise at a valuation of around $1.75 trillion.

That means Grok’s legal and reputational problems are now arriving directly beside SpaceX’s public market debut.
