Your Opinion: Democracy on ballot - Jefferson City News Tribune

Dear Editor,

Biden and Obama stated democracy was on the ballot because they wanted the acceptance of the results of the midterm election by all candidates -- Republicans and Democrats. The reason why this was an issue was that Donald Trump continues the Big Lie that the election of 2020 was stolen, consequently Biden is not the president.

Many of Trump's followers still believe this as confirmed by polling. Sixty-one percent of Republicans don't believe Biden won fair and square although over 63 percent of other Americans believe that he did. Seventy percent of registered voters in an October Pew survey agreed "the future of democracy in the country" will be very important to their vote this year.

Democracy depends on the losers conceding to the winners. In nations where elections can't be trusted, there is often violence by the losing party. We saw this when Trump encouraged his followers to invade the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. This took place after Trump and his followers had lost 60 court cases contesting the election. Trump's attorney general also assured him there was nothing to the fraudulent claims. Audits, recounts and harassment of election officials followed that election. Conspiracy theories, misinformation and disinformation by Trump and his acolytes have continued to fuel this lie.

Trump failed to subvert the vice president into not certifying the electoral votes. Trump, knowing this, sent his followers to the Capitol to stop the proper election certification....
