Zelensky Remains in Ukraine, Despite False Claims on Social Media - FactCheck.org

But a post circulating on Facebook falsely claims he fled and recorded a video using a green screen to make it appear as though he’s still in Ukraine. There’s no evidence to support the claim. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a video of himself to his Facebook and Instagram accounts on March 18 announcing humanitarian aid projects and reporting on Russian military tactics.

The video was filmed in front of Kyiv’s famed House with Chimeras, where Zelensky had recorded one of his first videos following Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24.

An image available on Google Maps shows the vantage point from which the recent video was shot.

But a clip of the video has been circulating on Facebook with this false claim: “The cowardly Ukrainian President Zelenskiy fled Kiev abandoning his people [and] broadcasts Presidential videos with a green screen background from the safety of a NATO bunker in Poland.”

In the early days of the war, Russian state media began pushing disinformation alleging that Zelensky had fled Ukraine, but those claims have been widely debunked.
