As investigators search for the cause of the deadly crash of Air India flight AI171, new attention is turning to past safety warnings from a former Boeing employee who worked at a factory that built the same model of aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, as per a report.
Whistleblower’s Past Warnings About Boeing's Dreamliner Plant Resurface
Late John Barnett, a quality inspector at Boeing and a whistleblower, had previously raised alarm about practices at Boeing’s North Charleston, South Carolina plant, and had warned years ago that unsafe parts and poor oversight could one day lead to catastrophe, according to The Telegraph.
While he was found dead in March 2024 at the age of 62, Barnett had accused the company of “countless” violations of US law and had filed a legal complaint in 2021, which was published by his lawyers after his death, as per the report.

Barnett had revealed that paperwork had been falsified and a contaminated tube designed to work in an oxygen system was removed from a scrap bin and alleged that it may have been installed in an aircraft that was now in service, reported The Telegraph. He had warned that without the part being sterilised, there was a risk it could cause an explosion and “bring the whole plane down," as per the report.
