Anti-Vaxxers Blame Vaccines for a Supposed Spike in Pet Cancers

What’s happening: Anti-vaxxers are claiming that pet vaccines are causing a cancer epidemic among dogs and cats, including so-called “turbo cancers.” However, vaccines have not been linked to a big rise in pet cancers, and in fact, there is limited data to back the claim that pet cancers are even on the rise.
A closer look: For decades, vaccination for diseases such as rabies and canine distemper has been a standard practice in veterinary care. The claim that vaccines can be deadly to pets has primarily been spread on social media platforms by anti-vaccine accounts that advocate for alternative health practices for pets.
For example, Margo Roman, a former Massachusetts-based veterinarian who lost her license to practice in the state for multiple incidents — including her refusal to vaccinate pets — made the claim in a video originally published on Aug. 4. In the video posted on KLA[.]tv, a website that NewsGuard has found to have spread false or egregiously misleading vaccine claims, Roman stated: “We’re seeing so much cancer in animals right now. … As holistic vets, we feel it’s over-vaccination.”
