WASHINGTON (TND) — The National Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat speaks to Chicago-based trial attorney Karen Conti about some of the biggest court cases of the week, including testimony from a Twitter whistleblower.
Conti said testimony from Peter “Mudge” Zatko, Twitter’s former head of security who claims user data and privacy is vulnerable due to the company's practices, might help Elon Musk void his $44 billion deal with Twitter.
He had explosive testimony about how Twitter lied to the federal government and filings and lied to shareholders,” Contin said. “In fact, there was a shareholder lawsuit filed on Tuesday by the Twitter shareholders, saying that Twitter lied to everybody. So, this dovetails right into Elon Musk’s argument that, ‘Hey, you didn’t give me all the information. You didn’t give me all the accurate information, and therefore, my deal to acquire Twitter should be voided.”
Conti also said there “is bipartisan interest and concern” that social media is not internally regulating itself, adding that she feels the Federal Trade Commission “is not doing a very good job” either.
I think what we’re going to see, Jan, is regulation by the government,” Conti said, adding that she believes the government will likely soon moderate privacy concerns, as well as content. “I mean, how many news stories did you have this morning about social media being criticized? So, I think that’s where we’re headed.”
