KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
U.S. Senate candidate and former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens said a top GOP consultant, Karl Rove, knew in advance his ex-wife was going to accuse him of abuse. He said it's part of a campaign to drive him from the race.
A story in the conservative Breitbart News says political allies of Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell were in on it, too, since Greitens opposes him being the GOP Senate leader.
"And the folks we know, Mike, to get to your question directly, who we know were involved, absolutely we know that Karl Rove was involved," Greitens said in an interview with KMBC's Micheal Mahoney.
"Did you have anything at all to do to orchestrate the Sheena Greitens affidavit?" Mahoney asked Rove.
"No. Not at all. I found out about it after it was filed with the court and became public," Rove said.
A spokesman for McConnell's political wing, the Senate Leadership Fund, gave a statement to KMBC, denying any role as well:
"We learned about the revelations in Ms. Greitens' filing when we read the AP story. There's nothing more to comment on because our organization had nothing to do with it."
On Tuesday, Sheena Greitens tweeted she did not discuss the contents of her court statement with anybody but her lawyer.
