WORCESTER – A social media page run by a local resident claimed on Wednesday, May 7, that a candidate for District A of the Worcester School Committee, Ashley Spring, is ineligible for the ballot. The page says Spring has not been a resident of Worcester for the required minimum of one year and cites Spring’s voter history showing she voted in the 2024 election in the town of Berlin.
These claims are false and without merit.
According to information released publicly by the office of the Worcester City Clerk, Spring submitted the required number of verifiable signatures to qualify for the ballot. The Board of Elections Commissioners determine the eligibility of candidates for appearing on the ballot after the signature certification process. The board does not take up eligibility until after May 15.
According to the office of the Worcester City Clerk, until the Board of Election Commissioners makes its determination, all candidates are considered “pending eligibility.”
Emails provided to This Week in Worcester by Spring show that on Friday, April 25, staff from the office of the city clerk emailed those who requested nomination papers to remind them of the May 6 deadline to submit the required signatures.
Five minutes after the employee in the clerk’s office sent that email, Spring responded to follow up on a previous eligibility inquiry. Spring is a part-time licensed practical nurse within Worcester Public Schools.
