FALSE: The planet has not cooled by 0.6℃ in 2025 - PesaCheck

A claim that global temperatures have decreased by 0.6 in 2025 is FALSE.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that global temperatures have decreased by 0.6 in 2025.

The post makes false claims PesaCheck has previously debunked: El Niño is responsible for global warming; global warming was affected by a volcanic eruption near Tonga; and carbon dioxide cools the planet.

But have global temperatures decreased by 0.6 in 2025?

Data from the United Kingdom’s Met Office indicate that 2025 is already hotter than 2024, at 1.55 above pre-industrial levels, part of a trend that matches global carbon dioxide emissions.

Data from the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) show that, as of the end of June 2025, there has been slightly less warming than in 2024, by 0.08 to 1.21 compared to the 1901–2000 average. It certainly has not cooled (a blue bar below).

Berkeley Earth found a slight decrease in warming between 2024 and 2025; notably, this does not mean cooling, it means that the increase is slightly less. This is not expected to last, however, with 2025 still being on course to be the hottest year ever recorded.

Already, 2025 so far is among the hottest ever recorded, and the first half has broken numerous records.

January 2025 was the warmest January on record, February the third warmest February on record, March 2025 was the warmest March compared to previous years, April the second warmest April recorded, May the second warmest May on record,...
