Finnish court convicted Indian whistleblower of aggravated embezzlement - Yle

Sanal Edamaruku had been living in exile in Finland since he exposed a religious "miracle" as a hoax in India in 2012, but he was arrested in Poland last month on an international warrant.

Sanal Edamaruku, an Indian activist who has been living in exile in Finland since 2012, was convicted in February of aggravated embezzlement by a Finnish court, according to records seen by Yle.

Edamaruku was arrested last month by authorities in Poland, where he was due to speak at a human rights conference, on foot of an Interpol international arrest warrant issued by India.

He first came to global prominence when he revealed in 2012 that water dripping from the "weeping crucifix" statue in the city of Mumbai was sewage water, and not a miracle — as had been widely claimed.

Edamaruku then accused Latin Christian priests in the country of scamming worshippers on a regular basis, saying they fabricated "miracles" as a means of generating money from devotees.

Under the threat of arrest under blasphemy laws, he fled to Finland and entered voluntary exile.

However, according to Yle's information, the arrest warrant against Edamaruku related to financial crimes — and not blasphemy.

Conviction by Finnish court

An Yle investigation found that Edamaruku was convicted of aggravated embezzlement by the Helsinki District Court in February 2025.
