WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Federal Trade Commission and four GOP-led states filed a lawsuit against a transgender medical group for allegedly making false claims regarding transgender procedures on minors.
The FTC, Alaska, Iowa, Nebraska, and Texas filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on Wednesday against the World Professional Association for Transgender Health for providing "the means for medical providers to make false and unsubstantiated claims to parents in order to sell pediatric medical transition services," according to the agency.
WPATH is "an association of clinicians who profit from pediatric medical transition services, recommended medical interventions, including drugs and surgery, for children and adolescents who expressed dissatisfaction with or distress about their sex traits," the FTC said.
The lawsuit alleges that WPATH's recommendations mislead "parents and children about the medical consensus and medical necessity, as well as the safety and effectiveness, of such services, in violation of the FTC Act," per the agency.
According to the complaint, WPATH allegedly failed to disclose the side effects of certain pediatric medical transition services, such as taking cross-sex hormones.
