Instacart Settles Worker Classification Suit for $46.5 Million - Bloomberg Law

Instacart parent Maplebear Inc. agreed to pay $46.5 million to end a San Diego City Attorney’s Office lawsuit claiming that the gig employer violated California law in classifying its workers as independent contractors.

The proposed stipulated settlement filed with the San Diego Superior Court follows the parties last week asking the California Supreme Court to forget about Instacart’s petition to review the case. The court could consider that petition as early as Wednesday during the justices’ weekly conference meeting.

The settlement covers some 308,000 workers, whom the grocery delivery service calls “shoppers,” who worked for the platform from September 2015 ...
