Man Named After Babe Ruth Charged With Fraud, Used Baseball Player Names in Claims - Bleacher Report

A man sharing the same name as New York Yankees icon Babe Ruth reportedly used the names of former professional baseball players to make fraudulent claims for payouts in class action settlements.

According to the Associated Press, a 69-year-old man from Tennessee named George Herman Ruth was charged with 91 counts in an indictment handed down in U.S. District Court on Aug. 12 (h/t ESPN).

He was charged with mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, fraudulent use of Social Security numbers, money laundering, making false statements to his probation officer and possessing firearms after having previously been convicted of felonies.

Ruth opened "more than a dozen" P.O. boxes in several cities and submitted "hundreds" of false claim forms to several different class action administrators while using the names of retired baseball players, per the Associated Press.

He obtained or attempted to obtain over $550,000 using the method.
