Opinion: Humane alternative needed for urban deer population - The Cincinnati Enquirer

On Oct. 30, an irate Oakley resident watched as a buck limped his way along Paxton Woods Drive. The deer had an arrow in his shoulder. While searching for the wounded buck, a motorist told us he just saw two dead deer lying on the side of Beechmont Avenue, one with an arrow in his neck.

Scaring deer out of their natural habitat can be deadly. Four terrorized deer were killed along a one-mile stretch of Woodford Road while running for their lives between Oct. 23 and Nov. 17. Three were struck by vehicles as they fled, examinations indicated. And bow hunters were active in Drake Park, which connects to Woodford Road, during that time period.

This past February, a horrified Pleasant Ridge resident saw a doe suffering with an arrow in her back. Numerous attempts to get help for the injured doe resting in her backyard were futile.

On Dec. 19, 2020, a Kennedy Heights woman, seeking the tranquility and therapeutic power of nature, went for a walk with her dog in their large, partially wooded backyard. She soon saw a young buck that had been shot with an arrow, then attacked and killed by coyotes. The deer’s ripped out entrails clearly showed he had been shot while eating at a shelled corn baiting area used by park bow hunters. The arrow had passed completely through the deer’s shoulder area. (The broken shaft of the Gold Tip 425 Ballistic arrow was recovered on their property, which abuts Drake Park.)
