'PAGA Is Broken': Critics Open New Fronts Against California's Key Labor and Wage Law | The Recorder - Law.com

After nearly two decades of failed legislative attempts to overhaul California’s controversial Private Attorneys General Act, critics have opened new fronts against the law that allows workers to sue employers for wage-and-hour violations on behalf of the state.

PAGA is under a double-barreled attack by longtime foes seeking major changes to the law through both the U.S. Supreme Court and California’s initiative process. By going around the Legislature, farmers, car dealers, trucking companies and other industry groups have their best chance in 18 years to curb the law that has cost them tens of millions of dollars in civil penalties.
