Rochester, N.Y. - RealEats, a Geneva based company, which has received millions of dollars in government funding, announced in early March it would suddenly close its doors.
The company became popular for its meal delivery service during the pandemic.
On March 1, the company posted a message to its website, announcing it was closed and thanking customers for support.
One former employee, Yvonne Winter, has filed a lawsuit on behalf of herself and the other 100+ employees who were suddenly laid off. The lawsuit requests 60 days of pay, and alleges the company did not give the advanced notice of the mass layoffs and plant closure that are required under the state's WARN Act.
Tom Riggio, co-owner of Craft Cannery, which supplied RealEats with all of its sauces, said he was notified of the closure, seemingly out of the blue. He was told that the company had closed and would not be paying Craft Cannery for the sauces it had just shipped to the Geneva plant, the sauces that were already ordered, prepared and ready to go and are now sitting in five gallon buckets at the warehouse. Riggio said Craft Cannery is out tens of thousands of dollars.
