Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton ordered to pay whistleblowers $6.6 million, judge rules - WFAA

A judge ordered Texas AG Ken Paxton's office to pay $6.6M for violating the Texas Whistleblower Act.

TEXAS, USA — A judge has ruled that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton violated the Texas Whistleblower Act and has ordered his office to pay four former employees $6.6 million.

In court documents, Travis County Judge Catherine Mauzy said Paxton retaliated against the employees after they reported the behavior they believed amounted to an abuse of power.

The former aides filed the lawsuit in 2020, alleging that Paxton fired them for reporting him to the FBI for allegedly abusing his office to help a wealthy friend and political donor, Nate Paul.

Paxton's office agreed to a settlement, but lawmakers in the Texas House launched an investigation when they were asked to fund that settlement.

That was the basis for Paxton’s impeachment by the Texas House in 2023. He was later acquitted after a trial in the Texas Senate.

The attorneys for the former aides, Tom Nesbitt and TJ Turner, sent WFAA a statement Friday evening:

"Late Friday afternoon, after a trial in state district court, our clients were awarded a judgment confirming that the Office of the Attorney General violated the Texas Whistleblower Act. After litigating for more than four years due to OAG's many delay tactics, Ken Paxton finally admitted to breaking the law to avoid being questioned under oath, but also because he had no defense.
