Former President Donald Trump repeated a false claim that some people, namely governors, favored killing babies after they are born.
During his press conference at Mar-A-Lago on Thursday, Trump answered a question about abortion by citing a Virginia House Bill that loosened restrictions on late-term abortions but raised questions about abortion “up until the moment of birth,” even while a woman was in active labor.
In a 2019 interview, former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) tried to explain that if a woman was in labor, the infant “would be delivered.” It became complicated for Northam when he further tried to explain that if an infant — which cannot be aborted, since it has been born — was born with a health issue that made it incompatible with life: “The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
But many on the right, including Trump, wrongfully twisted this message as “Democrats want to allow babies to be killed after birth.” And according to Trump’s claim, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) — Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate — agreed with this:
