Tory MP calls for Met Police whistleblowers’ charter after damning ... - The Big Issue

The Met Police has been condemned as institutionally homophobic, misogynistic, and racist in a landmark report

A Tory MP has called for a charter to give police whistleblowers “confidence to report” in the wake of the damning Casey Review which found London’s Metropolitan Police is institutionally homophobic, misogynistic, and racist.

Caroline Nokes, who is chair of parliament’s women and equalities committee, told The Big Issue there needed to be “immediate and rapid change”, and that a “duty to report incidents of homophobia, misogyny, racism would be a start”.

Her comments came as women’s campaigners reacted to the report with a call for the Angiolini inquiry – investigating Sarah Everard’s death – to be given statutory powers which would allow it to compel witnesses to give evidence.

Baroness Casey’s report warned the Met could be broken up if it does not improve, after exposing incidents of rape cases not being prosecuted because fridges used to store rape kits were broken, of a Muslim officer having his boots stuffed with bacon, and of female officers suffering abuse and harrassment by senior colleagues.

Discrimination is “baked into the system”, Casey’s report said.
