Supporters of a California bill allowing whistleblowers to report state tax law violations refuted claims from business groups that it would lead to abusive lawsuits against small or law-abiding businesses on Tuesday.
The bill (S.B. 799) from Sen. Ben Allen (D) and sponsored by Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) would reverse an existing exemption from the state’s False Claims Act for matters involving the Revenue and Taxation Code. It passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with a 10-2 vote at its first hearing and will be heard next by the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee.
