U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Friday directly rejected Iran's claim that its navy fired warning shots at American destroyers in the Gulf of Oman, calling the account false and warning that any such action would constitute a "gross violation of the ceasefire."
"CLAIM: Iran claims it fired warning shots at U.S. warships in the Gulf of Oman, forcing American vessels to 'retreat' toward the Indian Ocean. FALSE," CENTCOM wrote on X.
"TRUTH: Iranian forces did NOT attack or fire at U.S. Navy warships. Doing so would be a gross violation of the ceasefire. U.S. forces continue to operate freely in regional waters while fully enforcing the ongoing blockade against Iran," the statement added.
Iran claims missiles, drones fired at US destroyers
Earlier Friday, Iran's Army public relations office said its navy had fired warning shots using Qadir missiles and Shahid Dana offensive drones toward U.S. destroyers DDG-103 and DDG-87 operating in the Sea of Oman, and that the vessels subsequently left the area toward the Indian Ocean.
Iran framed the operation as part of ongoing efforts to counter what it described as U.S. harassment of Iranian commercial and oil tankers at sea.
The Iranian statement also warned that longer-range missiles would be used if necessary, even if U.S. vessels moved beyond the range of those initially deployed.
Iran did not specify when the alleged incidents occurred.
