A woman is facing a Circuit Court trial after being accused of knowingly making a false statement to gardaí in Wicklow.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at a sitting of Bray District Court charged with making a false statement, contrary to Section 12(a) of the Criminal Law Act 1976.
It is alleged that in 2025 the defendant knowingly made a false report or statement to gardaí.
Detective Garda Ray Kenny, attached to An Garda Síochána’s Divisional Protective Services Unit in Wicklow town, told the court that the accused gave no reply when charged, but that gardaí were not objecting to bail provided strict conditions were put in place.
The court was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the matter be dealt with on indictment, meaning the case will proceed before the Circuit Criminal Court, where significantly higher penalties can be imposed.
Her bail conditions include having no contact with the alleged injured party, surrendering her passport to gardaí within one month, and remaining within the State. She must also notify gardaí of any change of address or phone number.
Sergeant Mick Dee told the court that the prosecution requires six weeks for a book of evidence to be prepared.
Legal aid was granted to the defendant’s solicitor, Dermot Hickey, due to the “seriousness of the matter”.
Judge David Kennedy adjourned the matter until late June 2026.
