Woman’s false claims ‘fuelled racial division’ in town as she admits to taking a community service order ‘on the chin’

A woman whose false claims that she was sexually assaulted by a non national led to a “vigilante group” being set up, says she never had any issue with the foreign community in her town.
Tanya Wall, from Congress Villas, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, made a false claim to gardai in Dungarvan on February 19, 2023 that she was sexually assaulted by a group of men who dragged her down a lane as she made her way home from a night out.
She told officers the group forcibly pulled off her belt and pulled down her jeans but she managed to get away after another woman intervened. One of her sisters subsequently posted on social media that Ms Wall had been attacked by foreigners and they should not be left in the country.
The story made national and international headlines and unnamed relatives of Ms Wall later gave an interview to a right-wing news website expressing anger that gardai had asked them to take down the Facebook post.
The relative claimed that “concerns about identifying the attackers as non-Irish seemed to be more important than ensuring that other girls and woman were aware that they may be in danger”.
A “vigilante group” was subsequently set up in the town.
