YouTubers Sent to Prosecutors for Fake North Korea Oil Claims - 조선일보

YouTubers who made false claims that 900,000 barrels of oil from the Ulsan oil base flowed into North Korea were referred to prosecutors on the 8th.

The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that on the same day, they referred two YouTubers, who posted fake news related to oil on their YouTube accounts, to prosecutors without arrest on charges including defamation and obstruction of business. The police have also apprehended two more YouTubers who made similar claims and are investigating them.

They are suspected of posting videos on YouTube and other platforms claiming that, amid a surge in crude oil prices due to the U.S.-Israel invasion of Iran, approximately 900,000 barrels of crude oil stored at the Ulsan Oil Stockpiling Base were exported overseas and flowed into North Korea. In response, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources filed complaints against the accounts, leading to the investigation.

At the time, President Lee Jae Myung also instructed Yoo Jae-sung, acting head of the National Police Agency, during a Cabinet meeting, saying, “There is a very malicious false rumor spreading that 900,000 barrels of crude oil went to North Korea.” He added, “Find the people who first spread the false rumor. This is a serious crime as it hinders overcoming the national crisis by disrupting social order, so I hope you will respond strictly and swiftly.”
